"residues," by Luke Martin, is the result of an intense collaboration between composer and string quartet (Jonathan Tang, Yvette Holzwarth, Joy Yi, Thea Mesirow), resulting in five graphic scores for string quartet. Released via FWD: rcrds on January 8th, 2016, the group has had performances at the wulf., Automata Arts LA, and California Institute of the Arts. The works underwent several developments in the process of creation, from the transformation of photographs in generating the scores, the writing of corresponding poems, the decision-making in how to interpret the scores, and then, finally, in the recording process itself where each piece was recorded 3 or 4 different ways (with/out timings, with/out score, etc.) to create 'residues' of performance/recordings.
In Luke's own words: "The conceptual framework, as I see it, for the project was to explore everyday objects that exist in an in-between, or liminal, state (and kind of non-zone, zone). Each score was created from the images of five everyday objects, which were slightly altered via parameters of brightness, contrast, and exposure to make ‘residues’ of the original images, and then coupled with 'residual' poems I wrote for each piece. I chose specific objects that seem to fade from their existence (an ironing board, an old tarp, a garage wall, a block of wood used to prop something up, and the metal on the ground in my doorway) because they are consistently overlooked, leftover, or ignored; yet they function in an essential way. For example, the garage wall: one does not usually examine and consciously 'use' the wall, or even notice it, yet without it, the house would collapse. The objects exist, in some ways, as residues of themselves; they exist at certain limits of perception. Ultimately, they find themselves in an unstable relational space between subjects and everyday objects. In this space, there can be a dissolving of that subject-object relationship, creating a faded, yet vibrant mingling; a potential for new combinations, momentary sparks, and the slippage of selves."
