lecture on silence
5.5.16, calarts. lecture-performance series.
the lecture is 45 minutes long.
prepare a large bowl of mushroom soup, prior to the lecture. bring bowls and spoons.
the room should be dimly lit. ideally, no chairs or tables. people may sit on the floor.
upon entering the room, people should take a bowl and spoon. there may be a table at the entrance with a sign encouraging people to do so.
the lecture begins by saying:
I want to thank James Rushford and Manuel Lima for making this wonderful mushroom soup, which is vegetarian.
I want to thank Manuel Lima for allowing me to present my lecture on silence, and for all of the lecture-performances he has organized this spring.
I want to thank you all for coming. Following this lecture, Ben Levinson will be briefly sharing his thoughts on silence.
[long pause (several mintues)]
followed by saying:
this is a lecture on silence: what it is, where it came from, where it may go, and, maybe most importantly, how we can be willing and active in engaging with it.
this is a lecture on unintentional sound: what it is, where it came from, where it may go, and, maybe most importantly, how we can be willing and active in engaging with it.
i hope we, whether together or apart, can achieve a radical, quiet boredom, tonight.
i am going to step out for a period of time, and then i will come back.
please feel free to help yourself to the soup, it really is quite good. there is not a ton, so please take only enough so everyone can share the soup.
[very short pause]
if people walk in late, i would ask that you pour them a small bowl of soup, and offer them a beer.
lecturer steps out of the room, returns when the 45 minutes are up (having started a timer at the beginning).
this is the end of the lecture.
