co-incide for Ben Levinson | luke martin March 2016
this piece is for any number of people.
it may last any duration,
but that duration should be pre-determined for each performance and a timer should be used.
there should be nothing overtly dramatic or theatrical in any performance of this piece.
make a field recording of any space.
transcribe that field recording (or a portion of it).
isolate and organize the sound objects, by chance, into a grid. there may be empty boxes.
to begin –
listen carefully in any direction(s). allow your listening to wander through the space.
read carefully the grid of sound objects in front of you. allow your reading to wander through the page.
(there may be empty boxes in the grid, during which you are purely listening. along with the notated sound objects, these are also points of wandering/dwelling.)
if, while reading, you hear a sound in the space that
with the notated
that you are engaging with at that moment,
—perform an action--
for any duration. pause in reading the grid.
the action should be, generally, the same each time.
when done performing an action, resume listening and reading.
continue until the timer reaches the pre-determined limit of the piece.
*a co-incidence in sound objects may occur out of time. that is, if – unwilled – a memory of a past sound or an imagining of a future sound occurs, and it co-incides with the notated sound object that
you happen to be engaging with at that time, then you should ‘perform an action.’
